John Power charts his colourful career from 18 year old bass player from Allerton in Liverpool with seminal British indie pop band The La’s to his time as lead singer with one of Britpop’s most successful groups, the multi-platinum selling Cast to the present day, in this intimate solo show.
Power’s undeniable talent is evidenced by hits like Sandstorm, Alright, Walkaway, Fine Time and Guiding Star to name just a few, that we hear tantalising excerpts from, but it’s the stories behind the songs, the writing process, and Power’s world view and engaging personality that make this a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of one of the most critically acclaimed and influential times in British musical history.
Intensely spiritual, Power is aware of his talent but almost embarrassed by the raucous applause that meets each song. Songs played solely by Power on guitar or bass and each sounding phenomenally powerful. He accepts the fickleness of an often cruel business as fate or karma and has rode the rollercoaster with good grace. He talks fascinatingly about the sheer quantity of musical talent from South Liverpool (that he puts down to a mystical ley line in the area) and his friendship with the Gallagher brothers that has culminated in Cast supporting Oasis on their record-breaking stadium tour this summer.
This is an absolute gem of a show and as fascinating and entertaining for die hard fans of Power as it is for British music fans in general.
