Cross-Boarder Prog-Folk Band The Magpie Arc

The Magpie Arc is a Cross-Border band out of Sheffield, Arran and Edinburgh that blends Folk-Rock and Prog with Traditional and New Songs alike.

The buzz around this super group of the UK roots music scene and the anticipation among those in the know became clear as they hit festival stages during the summer of 2022 for their debut performances which included their fifth gig on the Main Stage at The Cambridge Folk Festival.

Lush harmonies from four singers, enigmatic fiddle lines, scything electric guitars and dynamic bass and drums combine with synths and drum machines to create what Mojo Magazine called “Liege and Lief affirming” and “an elemental racket”.

Folk Singer of the Year Nancy Kerr, Albion Band alumnus Tom A Wright and Guitar Legend Martin Simpson provide the English part of the band while “Caledonian Loudon Wainwright Findlay Napier and Edinburgh stalwart Alex Hunter bring the Scottish roots that see this band drawing influences from The Watersons to Steeleye Span to Rush and beyond.

Their first full length album, Glamour In The Grey, was released in November 2022 and enjoyed an unbroken run of ten months in the UK Official Folk Chart where it debuted at number 9.

Since the release of of Glamour In The Grey, The Magpie Arc have helped Mark Radcliffe celebrate his 10th Anniversary on the BBC Radio 2 Folkshow, made their International Debut in Ibiza and played numerous festival stages along the way, honing their craft and cementing their position at the vanguard of progressive folk-rock music.

“The possibilities The Magpie Arc offer are very enticing indeed. You owe it to yourself to catch this band as soon as you can. Capability, flair and originality rarely come so well wrapped.” (Spiral Earth)

“Everyone in the band brings their own talents but the synergy makes them much more than the sum of their parts. It takes “folk-rock” to a new and exciting level.” (Fatea Magazine)

“Folk-rock with Led Zeppelin vibes”. (Mark Radcliffe, BBC Radio 2)

“Just the right amount of Black Sabbath for folk-rock” (Rock Slam Podcast)

“The Magpie Arc are making path-breaking, genre-cutting moves in the British folk scene, and they are doing so with such fine-tuned talent and skill – their work is exciting!” (Edinburgh Music Review)

“A welcome shot in the arm and a wild ride” (KLOF Magazine)

“The fact The Magpie Arc have multiple vocalists also means there is a broad expanse to the band’s sound. The arrangements throughout are incredible. Each of the tracks have many intricate nuances but they are all merged seamlessly.” (Irish Independent)
